How do ductless mini-split systems work?

Ductless mini split systems consist of the following:

Outdoor unit. This is normally a compressed unit that is installed outside of the home.
Indoor unit. This is usually an exterior, wall-mounted unit with a fan.
Copper refrigerant lines. These lines connect the indoor and outdoor unit to one other.

In sum, the outdoor unit pumps and cools the refrigerant, directing it to the indoor unit via the copper lines. The fan within the indoor unit, then, works to distribute the air throughout the room. Warm air is then captured by the indoor unit and directed back toward the compressor/outdoor unit.
